TREES
Shelterwood Farm grows a total inventory of 30,000 trees, including 15,000 fir and spruce to 6 feet and 15,000 white pine to 10 feet.
- Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus)
- This white pine is native to the Eastern Coast of the United States from Canada to Georgia. Eastern White Pine is tolerant of almost all climates and soil types, from moist to well drained. For this reason this is an excellent choice for digging, landscaping, and screening. The tree has an average life expectancy of over 80 years, and, if so desired, can be sheared yearly. This is a fast growing tree which is basically disease and insect free. This variety holds its green color year round.
- Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziessi glauca)
- This douglas fir has a growing range from the northeast United States through Canada. This tree requires well-drained soil and will tolerate extreme weather conditions. This tree is recommended for group plantings and specimen trees. The tree is basically insect and disease free. This variety is a blue to bluish green color and can be pruned to a beautiful tight form.
- Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens glauca), Norway Spruce (Picea abies), and White Spruce (Picea glauca)
- These spruce grow naturally in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. Spruce are one of the hardiest evergreens and will take poorly drained soils. These trees are good specimen trees. Spruce has little or no insect or disease problems. Color is blue to bluish green. These trees are slow growing and do not need to be pruned for a good appearance.
